Opposition All People’s Party (APP-Sobeya) leader Essa Mbai Faal has accused the Gambian government of worsening debt distress and deepening economic hardship for citizens through what he described as unsustainable fiscal policies.
In an Eid message to the nation, Mr Faal said many families are celebrating the festival under difficult economic conditions, pointing to the rising cost of living. He attributed the situation partly to global oil price fluctuations but largely to what he termed “irresponsible borrow-and-spend policies” by the government.
“This continues to create debt distress on our economy and consequently enormous strain on ordinary Gambians,” he said.
Mr Faal said he had observed widespread hardship during a recent nationwide sugar distribution exercise, noting that many citizens are “suffering in silence,” and called for increased community support for vulnerable households.
He stressed the need for stronger accountability in governance, arguing that governments should be assessed based on their preparedness and priorities, particularly in addressing poverty and social welfare. He also warned of what he described as a growing lack of foresight in managing the country’s economic challenges.
The opposition leader further criticised delays in salary payments, saying they were particularly concerning during the Eid period when families face increased financial pressure.
“It exposes a level of disconnect or lack of concern for the everyday struggles of civil servants, many of whom live month to month,” he said.
Mr Faal also called for greater urgency and cooperation in addressing national issues, with particular emphasis on food security, which he described as a pressing concern.
“A country that cannot feed itself is doomed, and leadership that fails to plan for such realities is failing its people,” he said.
He urged government and political actors to set aside differences and prioritise citizens’ welfare, stressing that national challenges require unity, decisive action, and compassion.
Mr Faal reaffirmed his party’s commitment to promoting responsive leadership and policies aimed at safeguarding the dignity of Gambians.
