Gambia Records Milestone as Dr. Baba Leigh Becomes First Homegrown Consultant Hematologist

The Gambian health sector has marked a major milestone with the qualification of Dr. Baba Leigh as the country’s first homegrown Consultant Hematologist.

Dr. Leigh recently completed specialist training in hematology at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar, Senegal, and has returned to The Gambia under a partnership programme with the University of The Gambia (UTG).

His qualification is expected to significantly strengthen the country’s capacity to diagnose and manage complex blood disorders, including leukemia, sickle cell disease and clotting abnormalities, which have traditionally required costly overseas referrals.

For decades, The Gambia has faced an acute shortage of medical specialists, particularly in highly technical fields such as hematology. The training and return of Dr. Leigh represent a shift toward building specialized expertise through regional academic collaboration.

Medical experts have described the achievement as a critical step in reducing reliance on foreign consultants while enhancing local service delivery.

“This is a significant boost to specialized healthcare and a clear example of how regional partnerships can help build national capacity,” a medical community source said.

Beyond patient care, Dr. Leigh’s appointment is expected to contribute to the training of junior doctors and medical students, strengthening clinical education within the country.

The development is being seen as a sign of growing maturity in The Gambia’s health system, demonstrating that strategic investment in human capital can yield long-term benefits for national health security.
