The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court Wednesday remanded Adama Sanyang at Mile II Central Prison pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
He stands charges of stealing nearly two (2) million dalasis belonging to his brother, Kebba Sanyang.
Appearing before Magistrate A. Manneh, Adama was charged with theft contrary to Section 226 of the Criminal Offences Act, 2025. Police Prosecutor ASP Touray announced his appearance for the Inspector General of Police.
According to the prosecution, in 2024 at Bakau, within the Kanifing Municipality, the accused stole 260,000 Swiss Korona amounting to D1.9 million from his biological brother, Kebba who resides in Sweden.
The accused denied the charge, claiming he only took 57,000 Korona from the money. A plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf.
Testifying as the first prosecution witness (PW1), Kebba told the court that the money was intended for a business project. He explained that he had kept the money in a safe located in his father’s bedroom and alleged that the accused accessed the safe without their father’s knowledge. He added that it was only when he went to use the money for the planned project that he discovered it missing.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Manneh ruled that the offence was bailable. The accused was therefore granted bail in the sum of D2 million, secured by two title deeds valued at D1 million each or their equivalent. The deeds must be located within the Kanifing Municipality and deposited with the court registrar pending the outcome of the trial.
The case has been adjourned to Monday, 1st September 2025 at 10:30 a.m. for cross-examination of the prosecution witness. The magistrate ordered that the accused be remanded at Mile II until the bail conditions are fulfilled.
