The Commissioner General of the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), Yankuba Darboe, has vowed to modernize tax processes in a bid to foster a culture of voluntary tax compliance.

Mr. Darboe made the remarks on Thursday during a training session for accountants and members of the business community. He underscored the critical role they play in the country’s economic and fiscal landscape.

“The practice of accounting, particularly in taxation and business, requires awareness not only of existing tax laws but also of the instruments and technologies that support them,” he said. “The introduction of the Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS) will represent a fundamental shift in how tax administration operates, and it is imperative that both tax administrators and tax agents are fully prepared to navigate this new environment.”

He described ITAS as a comprehensive, secure, web-based platform designed to revolutionize tax collection in The Gambia. According to him, the system is not just an upgrade of the current one but a complete overhaul that will move GRA’s core services online.

“With ITAS, taxpayers and accounting practitioners will be able to conduct transactions more easily. It will significantly reduce the time and effort required to be tax compliant, enhance transparency, minimize human error, and provide a clear digital footprint for all transactions,” Mr. Darboe explained.

He stresses that the future of tax administration is digital, efficient, and built on the principles of service, transparency, and integrity. However, he called for the buy-in and active participation of stakeholders, particularly accountants and the business community, to ensure the success of ITAS.

“We want to share with you the mechanics of the ITAS system, demonstrate its functionalities, and address any questions or concerns you may have,” the GRA boss told participants.
