The United Democratic Party (UDP) has issued a strong warning to the Barrow-led government over what it describes as a growing failure to protect Gambians’ security.
A statement made available on Sunday, said the government’s inaction highlights a “reckless disregard for public safety” and shows “how little the Barrow government cares about the security and well-being of Gambians.”
The UDP specifically condemned the surge in dangerous drifting activities by youths in the Greater Banjul Area, emphasizing that this reckless behaviour not only endangers those involved but also threatens innocent citizens and property. According to the party, some of the participants are minors, and others operate vehicles without valid licenses, creating significant safety risks.
The party expressed dismay at what it perceives as the government’s failure to take decisive action. It noted that many of the offenders reportedly come from affluent families, a factor that has allegedly contributed to police inaction and lenient court penalties. The UDP stated that arrests and fines imposed on offenders are often insufficient to deter repeat violations.
Warning of the dangers of inaction, the UDP highlighted incidents in Jamang where residents took the law into their own hands by attacking offenders and damaging vehicles. The party said these events illustrate the potential rise of vigilante actions when the government fails to enforce the law, a trend that could undermine social stability.
To address the situation, the UDP called for urgent and concrete measures, including the immediate establishment of a dedicated Anti-Drifting Unit within the Police Force, the introduction of stringent laws with higher fines and mandatory custodial sentences, and the creation of a fast-track court to handle related offences efficiently. The party also urged reforms within the security sector to strengthen discipline, morale, and professionalism among law enforcement personnel.
“The safety and security of Gambians cannot be compromised by a reckless few,” the UDP said. “We stand firmly with the victims of these incidents and will continue to demand accountability, justice, and decisive government action.”
