Police in Wellingara have launched an investigation into the death of a one-month-old baby girl, which they say is suspected to be linked to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
According to a statement from the Gambia Police Force, the infant was allegedly subjected to circumcision and later developed severe bleeding. She was rushed to Bundung Maternal and Child Health Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police confirmed that two women alleged to be involved in the case are currently in custody as investigations continue. The child’s body has been moved to the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) mortuary for further examination.
The Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of vulnerable persons and urged members of the public to report any harmful practices to the nearest police station.
The investigation is ongoing.
