Groundnut and cashew exports from the Gambia will now enjoy duty-free access to the Chinese market, following the signing of new trade protocols between the two countries.
This was disclosed on Monday by Gambia’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MoTIE).
According to a press release from the Ministry, the agreement was signed during the Ministerial Meeting of Coordinators on the implementation of follow-up actions from the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), held in June 2025. The event also coincided with the 4th China–Africa Economic and Trade Expo.
The release stated that the objective of the gathering was to review progress on the ten-point action plan from the 9th FOCAC and strengthen economic cooperation between Africa and China. As part of the outcomes, The Gambia signed protocols that allow duty-free, quota-free access for groundnut and cashew under China’s Preferential Market Access Scheme.
“To ensure effective operationalization of these protocols, all exporters are required to register with The Gambia Food Safety and Quality Authority (FSQA),” the Ministry noted.
In light of this, the Ministry urged all economic operators intending to export groundnut and cashew to China to visit FSQA for the necessary registration formalities.
The ministry expressed hope that the agreement will open new trade opportunities for Gambian producers while strengthening the country’s export base.
