The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced Uzoma Obi, a Nigerian to five years mandatory jail term after pleading guilty of assault, causing grievous bodily harm.
The presiding magistrate Thomos T. Touray also ordered the convict Mr Obi to pay D100,000.00 compensation to the complainant, Abdoulie Jammeh, in default, he would serve an additional two-year-jail term.
The Prosecution officer, Inspector Cherno B. Jallow, told the court that Uzoma Obi willfully and unlawfully assaulted one Abdoulie Jammeh, by biting his index finger and cutting it off, causing him grievous bodily harm and thereby committing and offense.
It was stated that on or about the 3rd day of July 2025, at Bakau in the Kanifing Municipality of the Republic of the Gambia, the accused person UZOMA Obi, alleged to be drunken at the time, went with the complainant to his land lord to buy food. Upon their arrival, they were said to have taken each other’s food. This, eventually resulted into an intense quarrel and the accused eventually knocked the complainant on his face. As the complainant tried to retaliate, his index finger landed into the mouth of the accused who then bite the finger resulting to cutting it off the hand.
The matter was later reported to the Bakau Police station and then yesterday the accused was arraigned before the court where he pleaded guilty to the charges as read by the prosecutor, Inspector Cherno B. Jallow.
