The Gambia’s businesses have welcomed the introduction of the Gambia Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Digital Tax Stamp initiative as a major step forward for both private enterprise and the national economy.

For local manufacturers and importers, the innovation has created a more transparent field, illicit goods frequently flooded the market, undercutting legitimate businesses and eroding public trust. With digital stamps in place, counterfeit and smuggled products are less prevalent, and authentic producers are experiencing improved in the market conditions.
Prominent Gambian firms, including Bell Beverage Company and Gambega Coca-Cola Manufacturing Company, have publicly embraced the new system. Management of both companies have expressed appreciation for the transparency and accountability it brings to their operations. Bell Beverage, in particular, highlighted how the stamp helps protect domestic industries from unfair competition and contributes to overall economic growth.
During a recent industrial tour, GRA Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe commended the high rate of compliance among manufacturers. He emphasised that the digital tax stamp helps broaden the tax base while discouraging tax avoidance.
“We cannot increase tax, but we want to broaden the tax base. We are trying to stop tax avoidance. Digital tax stamps would reduce tax evasion due to under-declaration,” CG Darboe told journalists during the tour improved market conditions. According to GRA reports, the introduction of the digital tax stamp has already yielded significant results. Within a short time, the system has helped reduce smuggling of excisable goods by as much as 95%, marking a major achievement for the country’s revenue system. This has led to increased government income while strengthening the security and viability of legal businesses.
Bell Beverage Company reported substantial improvements following the installation of automatic applicators. Noting: “The introduction of the stamp was challenging initially due to the adaptation of sticker application into the production line, but improved when we were provided automatic applicators. It has streamlined the compliance process.” The company also noted that the digital stamp has helped distinguish between genuine and smuggled products, improving enforcement and consumer confidence.
The company stressed that customer relations have not been negatively affected by the stamp, affirming that the initiative is widely understood and accepted in the market. Affirming the impact of digital Tax Stamp as part of GRA’s wider push to modernise tax administration through digital tools. By leveraging technology, the authority aims to enhance operational efficiency and promote a more transparent and equitable tax environment.
The Bell Beverage Company proposed to GRA to strengthen compliance by increasing inspections and tightening declaration mechanisms at all points of entry by: sea and land.
