Commonwealth Reaffirms Support For Gambia’s Democratic Transition

  Gambian President Adama Barrow received Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayokor Botchwey at the State House in Banjul, where they discussed ways to deepen cooperation and strengthen engagement.

The talks reviewed progress in relations between The Gambia and the Commonwealth of Nations, while identifying priority areas for further collaboration, including human rights, migration management and the proposed establishment of a diplomatic academy.

President Barrow reaffirmed The Gambia’s support for efforts to strengthen partnerships within the Commonwealth to promote economic growth. He urged member states to enhance intra-Commonwealth trade, promote innovation and develop sustainable financing mechanisms to support women and youth empowerment programmes.

On transitional justice, the President called for Commonwealth support towards reparations and technical assistance linked to the recommendations of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission, stressing the need to maintain public confidence in the judicial system.

Barrow also outlined government efforts to build the capacity of young people through investment in education and skills development, aimed at preparing them for national leadership roles. He noted that infrastructure expansion, including electricity access and road development, is contributing to inclusive growth across the country.

The President reiterated The Gambia’s commitment to conducting a free, fair and transparent presidential election, with support from the Commonwealth.

For her part, the Secretary-General reaffirmed the Commonwealth’s commitment to supporting The Gambia’s democratic consolidation, particularly in strengthening resilience and accompanying the country on its democratic path.
