President Adama Barrow, in his capacity as Chair of the 15th Islamic Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has expressed deep concern over rising tensions in the Middle East while calling for diplomacy to work.

According to a statement made available to Voice Newspaper on Thursday, the concern follows reports of military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran, and subsequent retaliatory responses affecting regional interests.

President Barrow warned that the developments could further destabilize an already fragile environment, with potential serious consequences for civilian populations, critical infrastructure, and regional and global security.

He called on all parties to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and comply fully with obligations under the United Nations Charter and international law, including respect for state sovereignty and protection of civilians in line with international humanitarian law.

As Chair of the Islamic Summit, President Barrow reiterated the OIC’s longstanding position that disputes should be resolved peacefully. He stressed that dialogue, diplomacy, and constructive engagement are the most effective avenues to reduce tensions and promote sustainable peace.

He also encouraged all parties to pursue diplomatic channels through the United Nations and other relevant international and regional mechanisms, noting that the OIC stands ready to support sincere efforts at de-escalation, mediation, and peaceful dispute resolution.

The Republic of The Gambia reaffirmed its commitment to peace, justice, and the rule of international law. President Barrow urged the international community to intensify efforts to promote restraint and diplomacy in order to preserve regional stability and global peace.
