The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the SeneGambia Police Station is investigating a case of alleged theft involving one million dalasis (D1,000,000.00), police sources said on Tuesday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, identified as Ebrima Buckle Kargbo, a resident of Manjai and a professional driver, was accompanying the complainant on official duties to collect payments from various establishments.
According to sources, during the exercise, a total sum of approximately D1 million was collected and kept in the custody of the complainant.
On their return journey, the complainant reportedly stopped briefly and alighted from the vehicle, leaving the cash inside. The suspect allegedly drove off the vehicle and absconded with the money.
The suspect was intercepted and arrested on Jan. 31, 2026, at the Kerr Ali border by security personnel, where he was found in possession of D42,000. He was subsequently escorted to the SeneGambia Police Station for further investigations.
During interrogation, the suspect admitted committing the offence, investigators said, adding that USD 3,500 and D262,150 were recovered from individuals who had been entrusted with part of the stolen money.
All persons linked to the case are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, as efforts continue to recover the remaining funds and conclude enquiries.
The Gambia Police Force has reassured the public of its commitment to fully investigate the matter and take appropriate action in accordance with the law.
