ATM Fraud Suspect Arraigned in Kanifing Court

A man, Christ Renner, Wednesday appeared before the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, facing charges of theft involving an ATM card.

Renner was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Sallah M’bai under Section 226 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.

Prosecution told the court that on December 14, 2025, in Senegambia, Kanifing Municipality, Renner allegedly stole D9,000 (nine thousand dalasi) belonging to Musa Jatta.

Sergeant S. Bah, the prosecuting officer, explained that the complainant had sent his brother, Abdou Aziz Gaye, to withdraw the money via a cardless ATM transaction at the Ecobank branch in Senegambia. Upon arrival, Gaye struggled with the process, and Renner approached him, offering assistance.

According to the prosecution, Renner then convinced Gaye that the ATM was not functioning. Gaye left the machine, unaware that Renner had obtained the withdrawal code. Renner reportedly took a taxi to another Ecobank branch at Pipeline and withdrew the full amount without Gaye’s knowledge.

The complainant, Musa Jatta, received a notification of the withdrawal and confirmed with Gaye that he had not conducted the transaction, after which he reported the matter to the authorities.

Renner pleaded “not guilty” when the charges were read to him in English, his preferred language in court.

Then, Sergeant Bah requested an adjournment to secure the first witness, but did not oppose granting bail for the accused. Principal Magistrate M’bai later granted Renner bail to the tune of D15,000.00 or the alternative of a Gambian surety with valid identification to provide an affidavit of means.

The case was adjourned for further hearing.
