The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has arrested a suspect and safely recovered a seven-month-old infant following a reported child-stealing incident in the capital, Banjul.

According to a statement the incident occurred on Sunday, 25 January 2026, when a woman travelling from Barra to Banjul boarded a commercial vehicle with her baby. During the journey, the mother briefly entrusted the child to a fellow passenger while she stepped away. On her return, both the passenger and the infant were missing.

The matter was immediately reported to the Banjul Police Station, prompting swift police action, including coordinated follow-up operations and public alerts to help trace the missing child.

On Monday, 26 January 2026, police arrested a 17-year-old female suspect at Ebo Town while in possession of the infant. The child was recovered unharmed, medically examined as a precaution, and reunited with the mother.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue in line with due process and child justice procedures.

The GPF commended members of the public for their vigilance and cooperation, reaffirming its commitment to child protection and public safety. Parents and guardians were urged to exercise caution when travelling with children, especially in public transport and crowded places.
