About 100 Gambians Detained in Turkey – Foreign Minister Njie

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad, Serign Modou Njie, has confirmed that approximately 100 Gambian migrants are currently being held in detention centers across Turkey. He disclosed during a recent interview with West Coast Radio.

Addressing concerns over reports that Gambians in Turkey were experiencing difficulties accessing assistance from the Gambian embassy, Minister Njie noted that many detainees had already exceeded the legally permitted 72-hour detention period.

“When I conducted my inquiries and contacted our embassy in Turkey, I was informed that about 100 Gambians are currently in detention centers, which number up to 22 in total. We have records of all those detained, and it is extremely difficult for anyone to be held for an entire year,” Minister Njie stated. He added, “This demonstrates the embassy’s commitment to supporting Gambians, and we will continue to address these issues diplomatically.”

To help resolve the challenges faced by Gambian migrants in Turkey, Minister Njie pledged to pay a courtesy visit to the Gambian embassy to improve accessibility and support for citizens.

“I will ensure that the embassy is reachable at all times, so Gambians can contact them whenever necessary. During my previous tenure, receiving calls from citizens was a priority, and we plan to restore that standard,” he emphasized.

Minister Njie further stated that the concerns raised by Gambians would be addressed through bilateral discussions with the Turkish government to safeguard the well-being of Gambian nationals.

He reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to supporting Gambians abroad, particularly those in Turkey. “We will never relent as a government. We will identify their needs and ensure that the conditions they face are addressed. We are aware of these challenges and will continue to act,” he said. Highlighting the ministry’s hands-on approach, Minister Njie noted that he personally accommodated 22 Gambians during his stay in Turkey.

Finally, Minister Njie urged Gambian youths to avoid irregular migration due to its risks and encouraged families to support young people in pursuing business opportunities as a safer and sustainable alternative to illegal travel.
