The Brikama Magistrates’ Court on Thursday convicted Sulayman Njie, a Gambian, after finding him guilty of stealing while employed as a bank teller.

Magistrate Kanjura B. Sambou then fined the convict to pay D30,000.00 or, in default, to serve one year imprisonment, and he was ordered to pay compensation of D3 million, failing which he would serve five years in prison. The sentences will run concurrently.

The case, brought by the Inspector General of Police, was prosecuted by Sergeant 4422 MJ Sallah and Sergeant 7232 E. Fofana. Njie appeared without legal representation.

According to the charges, Njie, between January and August 2024, while working at Relliance Financial Services, Brikama Branch, misappropriated three million Dalasis (D3,000,000) from various customer accounts, an offence contrary to Section 258 of the Criminal Code (Cap 10:01, Vol. 3, Laws of The Gambia, 2009).

Njie pleaded not guilty to the charges. During the trial, the prosecution called witnesses to substantiate the allegations, while the accused denied all charges during cross-examination.
