By Gambia Ports Authority

It is with heavy hearts, yet profound gratitude, that we remember and celebrate the remarkable life of Mr. Halifa Baboucarr Bah—a man whose journey was defined by service, discipline, humility, and an unwavering love for his country and community.

Born on 5th May 1955 in Banjul, Mr. Bah’s life was shaped early by purpose and promise. He began his academic journey at St. Augustine’s High School in the late 1960s, laying the foundation for a life marked by excellence, leadership, and integrity. Even in his youth, those who knew him recognized a man destined to contribute meaningfully to the nation.

Mr. Bah’s professional career began at the Gambia Ports and Harbours Authority (GPA)—an institution that would become both his training ground and the stage upon which he would leave an enduring legacy. Driven by a hunger for knowledge and growth, he pursued higher education abroad, earning a Bachelor of Science in Maritime Studies from Riversdale College, Liverpool Polytechnic. His pursuit of excellence took him across continents, attending advanced pilot and maritime training in Kitakyushu, Japan; Liverpool, United Kingdom; and completing a Master of Science in Port Management at the World Maritime University in Stockholm in 1995.

These achievements were far more than academic milestones—they were investments in national development. Mr. Bah returned home not just with certificates, but with vision, expertise, and an unshakable commitment to The Gambia.

His career progression was exemplary. From working on local boats such as the Bintang Bolong, he steadily rose through the ranks, demonstrating competence, fairness, and leadership. In August 1986, he was redeployed to the Gambia Ferry Services, where he served as Acting Manager Designate under Ivor Forster, alongside the Operational Director—marking the beginning of a distinguished leadership chapter.

Mr. Bah eventually rose to the highest levels of management, serving as Director of Operations at the Gambia Ferry Services and later heading the Banjul Shipyard, a GPA subsidiary. During challenging times, he was entrusted with the role of Acting General Manager of the Banjul Shipyard, a testament to the confidence placed in his judgment, professionalism, and integrity.

Beyond titles and offices, Mr. Bah was a charming, approachable, and deeply respected figure. He possessed a rare ability to lead with firmness while maintaining warmth and humanity. His friendly relationships uplifted colleagues and inspired loyalty. Where he worked, morale thrived. Where he led, trust prevailed.

Even in retirement, Mr. Bah embodied the spirit of service. Retired, but not tired, he remained actively engaged in national and community activities, offering guidance and mentorship within his Half-Die community. His post-retirement years reflected the same quiet, selfless dedication that had defined his life—a life devoted to giving back with dignity.

Today, we mourn his passing, yet we do not mourn a life unfinished. We celebrate a life well-lived, a legacy well-earned, and a man whose impact will continue to echo across the maritime sector, public service, and the hearts of all who knew him.

Mr. Halifa Baboucarr Bah leaves behind not only professional achievements but a timeless example of leadership rooted in integrity, humility, and service to humanity. May his dedication inspire future generations, may his memory remain a blessing, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.

Rest in perfect peace, Mr. Halifa Baboucarr Bah. Your voyage was noble. Your legacy endures.
