The Ministry of Youth and Sports, through the National Youth Council, on Monday disbursed GMD 6.5 million to support regional infrastructure and grassroots sports development across The Gambia.
The funds target key zones in the Kanifing Municipality and West Coast Region, including Serrekunda East, Serrekunda West, Manjai, Brikama, and Gunjur, as well as rural sports committees nationwide. The initiative aims to improve sports facilities, nurture young talent, and foster sustainable development at the community level. Each committee received allocations to upgrade facilities and support local sports programs.
Speaking at the Presidential Award Scheme in Bakau, Lamin S. Jawla, Executive Director of the National Sports Council, emphasized the long-term impact of the investment.
“Sports development is more than just facilities and playing fields. When we invest in infrastructure, we invest in our youth—the future of our country,” he said.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Bakary Y. Badjie, highlighted the importance of accountability in managing the funds.
“This initiative is timely, but committee heads must exercise responsibility. Funds are provided to be used as intended, and we expect transparency in their deployment,” he stated, alluding to previous cases where resources were not fully utilized for designated purposes.
Beneficiaries welcomed the support. Momodou Musa Cham, President of the Serrekunda East Sports Committee, expressed appreciation and pledged to manage the funds responsibly.
“If these funds are used properly, they will set a new trajectory for sports development in The Gambia,” he said.
The disbursement underscores the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening grassroots sports, enhancing local infrastructure, and creating opportunities for young athletes across the country. By empowering local sports committees and prioritizing accountability, the ministry aims to cultivate talent, foster healthy competition, and build a sustainable foundation for the nation’s sports sector.
