Gbassay Touray, a Sierra Leonean national Monday appeared before Kanifing Magistrates’ Court charged with stealing cash from a vehicle belonging to Yusupha Saidy Leigh.
Appearing before Principal Magistrate Sallah M’bai, Touray stands accused of stealing cash amounting to 8200 US dollars, equivalent to 602,700 Gambian dalasis, a charge he continues to deny.
He is charged with stealing from a motor vehicle contrary to Section 231(c) of the Criminal Offences Act 2025. Prosecutor Sgt. 3217 E. Camara told the court that the accused allegedly stole the money from a Toyota vehicle with registration number BJL 8779Y on 15 November 2025 at Kotu in the Kanifing Municipality.
When the charge was read out to the accused in a language he understood, he pleaded “not guilty.”
Then, Sgt. Camara applied for an adjournment to give the prosecution time to secure its witnesses. He did not oppose the granting of bail to the accused but noted that, as a foreign national, he could leave the jurisdiction without proper conditions.
The court granted bail with three Gambian sureties, who must each deposit a valid national ID card that corresponds with their SIM-registered GSM number.
The matter was adjourned to 16th December 2025 at 1 p.m. for continuation of the hearing.
