Former military officer Abdoulie Sanyang is expected to appear today, Monday, 6th October, before Justice Ebrima Jaiteh of the Banjul High Court.

It could be recalled that Sanyang was arrested on Sunday, 17th August 2025, at the Banjul International Airport following remarks he made during the Coffee Time with Peter Gomez program on West Coast Radio, broadcast on 14th August 2025.

According to court records, Sanyang faces charges of arson, sedition, incitement, and offences relating to judicial proceedings.

He was first arraigned before Magistrate Thomas Touray of Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on 21st August 2025, and the police prosecution requested that the case be transferred to the High Court due to jurisdictional limitations.

Meanwhile, particulars of the offences detail that in count one, Sanyang is alleged to have, sometime in 2016 at Kanifing South, wilfully and unlawfully participated in planning and setting fire to the National Bureau of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), thereby committing an offence.

Count two alleges that on or about 14th August 2025, at West Coast Radio in Kotu, Kanifing Municipality, Sanyang made remarks intended to bring hatred, contempt, or disaffection against the person of the President of the Republic of The Gambia. He allegedly claimed that the President was deeply involved in electoral malpractices during the 2021 presidential election.

Count three states that on the same day, Sanyang allegedly declared that he had financially supported the 3 Years Jotna Movement to organize an illegal protest calling for President Adama Barrow’s resignation.

Count four alleges that Sanyang made statements intended to show disrespect to judicial proceedings, describing the court handling the case of Ousainou Bojang as a “clandestine court,” remarks said to be calculated to bring the court into disrepute.
