After a decade of service behind the scenes and in different leadership roles, Mr Great Akah Ottuduoma has finally risen to the top as the President of the Nigeria Diaspora Charter in The Gambia, known for his unwavering dedication to uniting Nigerians abroad and fostering cultural pride. His recent milestone was marked in a vibrant celebration that lit up the Westfield of Serekunda on Saturday, June 14, 2025.
Nigerians in The Gambia gathered for an unforgettable Afro Festival, the first of its kind, masterminded and organized by the newly elected President. The event not only marked a cultural awakening but also the beginning of a new chapter in the Charter’s leadership.
The event was a cultural mosaic of music, dance, comedy, and talent that drew hundreds of Nigerians, both young and old. The celebration was graced by royal presence, notably the esteemed Oba Moshood KB Abolade Ariwajoye of the Yoruba community, alongside many traditional chiefs, artists, comedians, and upcoming musicians. In a heartfelt speech, President Great called on Nigerian youth in The Gambia to “excel in everything they do,” reminding them of their roots, power, and potential.
In an exclusive interview with The VOICE Newspaper, the President opened up on his vision behind the festival and addressed pressing concerns of the Nigerian diaspora community in The Gambia.
Lack of Documentation for Nigerians in The Gambia.
When asked about the long-standing issue of Nigerian residents struggling to obtain proper documentation and legal assistance, and what his concrete plans are, the President acknowledged the hardship and offered a clear solution.
“We are aware of the documentation challenge our citizens face, especially the need to travel to Senegal just to get captured. That is why by July we are bringing the biometric capture machine directly to The Gambia’ he confirmed. “This will make it easier for our people to register and renew their documents without unnecessary stress or cost.
Why Afro Festival?
The President passionately shared his motivation behind initiating the Afro Festival, emphasizing the untapped potential of young Nigerians abroad
“This Festival is not just about music or dance. It is about our youth, we have incredibly talented Nigerian youths here in The Gambia who deserve recognition and opportunity,” he said
“Afro Festival is our platform to showcase that talent, connect the community, and celebrate our identity in a positive light’
On Division and Tribal Allegiances
Addressing concerns around tribal and ethnic divisions, the president firmly stated that his administration promotes inclusivity.
“Our government is built on unity, we have people from every region and background working together, there is no room for division or tribalism in the Nigeria we are building.
Afro festival was more than an event; it was a call for unity, pride, and forward momentum for all Africans spearheaded by Nigerians on Gambian soil.
