The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) is set to organise a one-day workshop on Thursday, 12th June, aimed at advancing the professionalisation of football in the country. The event, titled A Roadmap to a Sustainable League, will take place at Metzy Residence Hotel in Kololi.

According to the GFF, the workshop will bring together key stakeholders from across the football ecosystem including government agencies, clubs, sponsors, media, players, and civil society to collectively develop a strategic plan for a well-organised and financially sustainable professional league in The Gambia.

The GFF highlighted that while football remains the most popular sport in the country with great potential to foster social cohesion, youth empowerment, and economic growth, the current state of Gambian football faces challenges such as financial sustainability, inadequate infrastructure, and limited professional development. These issues have hindered the sport’s ability to reach international standards and achieve its full transformative impact.

“The establishment of a professional league will present a timely and strategic opportunity to elevate the sport nationally, create viable career pathways, and generate broader economic benefits,” the GFF said in a statement. The workshop will present initial findings from recent consultations and research, facilitate dialogue on the league’s strategic direction, identify gaps, and recommend actionable solutions.

The federation acknowledged the importance of collaboration among all key players in realising the dream of professional football in The Gambia, which is why it has convened this critical forum.

GFF President Lamin Kaba Bajo is scheduled to deliver the welcome remarks, while the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie, will provide the keynote address.
