Lawyer Warns Opposition Against Making Past Coalition Mistakes

Lawyer Assan Martin has warned opposition forces not to rush to judgment and repeat the “mistakes of the past,” ahead of 2026 presidential election.

Speaking to The Voice on Monday, the political activist and rights advocate says most Gambians are desperate to see a change in 2026. This, he emphasizes, must be done with calm and calculated approach considering the political dynamics of the Gambia.

He says that an opposition coalition or an alliance will easily help to bring about change for the good of the country, aligning himself with those who are advocating for a change of government.

I totally agree that Barrow needs to go and he doesn’t deserve a third term as most Gambians are tired of living under the current hardship and poor governance system, with no hope due to corruption,” Martin told The Voice in an exclusive interview.

Quizzed on his opinion about the kind of candidate a united coalition needs for success in the election, he points out that the expectations are to obtain a coalition with a difference under a “viable and exemplary” candidate who can give the nation a fresh start and end social resentments.

The rights advocate maintains that it is a kind of candidate who understands national unity and institutional governance issues.

“It must be someone who maintains standards and ethics in government, fairly representing the interests of all Gambians with clean track record and ready to change the old political culture to new dynamics and improve the standards of living,” he said.

“Gambians need not despair politically. Remember, we formed a coalition of change in 2016.  Hence, a coalition or alliance will be envisaged come 2026. Again, we expect meaningful and proper economic, social, and legal reforms, not the Barrow failed reforms,” he added.

Mr Martin concludes that the oppositions cannot afford to plunge into the mistakes of the past, even though respect and benefit of doubt can be given to parties. “With or without a selection process, there can be a formidable coalition based on compromise,” he remarked.
