The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) has condemned what it calls “deliberate vandalism” of its solar power plant in Jambur, Kombo South District.
In a statement released by the company on Wednesday, NAWEC said critical infrastructure was “deliberately” tampered with.
It disclosed that a total of 36 panel sets were cut and disconnected, adding that each set comprised 18 solar panels, representing a significant disruption to the plant’s operation and output.
“Our technical teams are currently assessing the extent of the damage and working on recovery plans to ensure system restoration and prevent future occurrences,” the statement said.
It added that investigations were also underway to identify those responsible and reinforce site security. The security team was also assisting in the investigation.
“We strongly condemn such acts that undermine national development efforts and urge the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities around our installations. NAWEC remains committed to delivering reliable and sustainable energy for all,” the statement emphasized.
The project was funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Union (EU), and the World Bank (WB), and it was commissioned by President Adama Barrow in March, 2024.
