2026 Political Earthquake? Expert Predicts Major Political Realignment Ahead

By: Fatou Krubally

Renowned social and political analyst Professor Yorro Mballow has forecast a major political shake-up in the lead-up to the 2026 presidential election, warning that Gambia is heading into “interesting times” marked by shifting alliances, distrust in institutions, and the emergence of new political voices.

In a statement, Professor Mballow suggested that several political parties may realign ahead of the next election, with some expected to join President Barrow’s National People’s Party (NPP), while others could form a coalition with the newly emerging APP-Sobeya movement. He also noted that the United Democratic Party (UDP) is likely to chart its own course independently.

“The GDC may align based on motive, but opposition parties will struggle to unite due to leadership differences,” he observed, adding that civil society support for a united opposition front could pose a serious threat to the NPP.

Professor Mballow noted a growing public distrust in political institutions, driven by a lack of ideological debate, political complacency, and a disconnect between leaders and the electorate.

Calling on the media to play a responsible role in fostering debate and holding our leaders accountable would lead to radical change.
