The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court Tuesday granted bail to one Baba Jang Sowe, who is facing a charge of stealing 200 pieces of iron rods valued at D75,000.
The case, presided over by Magistrate B. Sowe, involved allegations that Mr Sowe stole the metal rods from one Masanneh Ceesay on May 10, 2025, in Bakau, within the Kanifing Municipal Council. He is charged under Section 252 of the Criminal Code, Cap 10.01 Volume III, Revised Laws of The Gambia 2009.
According to the charge sheet, the accused allegedly took the construction materials without consent of the owner. However, when called to respond to the charge, Sowe denied the charge, saying, “I didn’t steal them.”
Prosecuting Officer, Inspector B. Jarra appeared on behalf of the Inspector General of Police and requested an adjournment to allow time to secure prosecution witnesses.
Following the application, Magistrate Sowe ruled in favour of bail, noting that the prosecution did not oppose the bail request. Sowe was therefore granted bail in the sum of D75,000, with one Gambian surety. The surety must present a valid national identity card or passport and swear to an affidavit of means.
The case was adjourned for the prosecution to open its case at the next sitting.
