As part of its efforts to boost regional tourism and strengthen market-driven strategies, the Gambia Tourism Board, in collaboration with its partners, officially welcomed a new airline, ValueJet, from Nigeria on Thursday, 15th May 2025. Established in 2018, ValueJet aims to become a global airline that connects people and destinations through modern air travel, supported by a dedicated and professional team.
Touching down at 23:45 with a delegation of tourists and airline executives, the flight was met with a warm ceremonial welcome from officials of the Gambia Tourism Board (GTBoard), the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the Nigerian High Commission, and other dignitaries.
This marks a strategic milestone in the GTBoard’s drive to expand regional tourism and strengthen air connectivity within West Africa.
Speaking at the welcome ceremony, Abdoulie Colley, Director of Operations at the GCAA, assured the airline of full regulatory support:
“We are committed to ensuring the highest standards of aviation safety and security. The records show that Gambia is a safe and compliant destination, and we welcome ValueJet with open arms.”
Representing the Nigerian High Commission, Kelechi Nwosu echoed this sentiment, calling the launch a testament to the close ties between Nigeria and The Gambia.
“This moment showcases our enduring brotherhood,” he said. “Such initiatives deepen both cultural and economic ties and support Gambia’s ambition of becoming a regional hub for tourism and commerce.”
Trevor Henry, Chief Commercial Officer of ValueJet, expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended to his team, remarking on the symbolic water cannon salute traditionally reserved for inaugural flights.
“The Gambia is a key part of our regional expansion,” he said. “After successfully meeting Nigeria’s regulatory conditions, our Air Operator Certificate is valid until 2029, and we’re thrilled to expand into West Africa, starting with The Gambia.”
ValueJet announced its intention to operate a route connecting Lagos–Accra–Banjul, with Ghana set to be included within the next month.
Representing The Gambia High Commission in Nigeria, Defense Adviser Assan Njie extended the government’s appreciation to ValueJet and all stakeholders.
“This inaugural flight marks the beginning of a promising journey,” he said. “We wish ValueJet a successful operation and look forward to the benefits this partnership will bring to both countries.”
The new route opens doors to increased business travel, tourism, and cultural exchange between Nigeria and The Gambia and helps reinforce The Gambia’s place as the “Smiling Coast of Africa.”
