Magistrate B. Sowe of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court has sentenced Abubacarr Jatta to one- year imprisonment for stealing a motorbike belonging to Pa Nderry Touray in July 2024.
Delivering her judgment, Magistrate Sowe noted that the accused did not waste the court’s time, as he pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him. She sentenced him to a mandatory one-year custodial term and further ordered him to pay D35,000 in compensation to the complainant. In default of payment, Jatta will serve an additional one-year jail term.
Before the judgment, Police Prosecutor Inspector B. Jarra narrated that on 24th July 2024, the accused stole the motorbike and used it regularly at night for personal purposes.
The theft came to light when a friend of the complainant discovered the stolen motorbike hidden in a swampy area around Jeshwang. The friend immediately informed the complainant, who then alerted the police.
Officers visited the scene, recovered the motorbike, and arrested Jatta. However, some parts of the motorbike had already been damaged by the time it was retrieved. The accused was subsequently charged and brought before the court.
