The Senegalo-Gambian Permanent Secretariat has strongly condemned recent social media remarks that it says are aimed at stirring divisions between The Gambia and Senegal, describing them as inflammatory and unhelpful to the longstanding relations between the two nations.
In a press release issued out Monday, the Secretariat urged media houses and individuals to exercise greater caution and responsibility when sharing information that could potentially damage the “unity and collaborative spirit” that both countries have fostered over the years.
“The Senegalo-Gambian Permanent Secretariat, as the institutional embodiment of the longstanding ties and mutual cooperation between the Republic of The Gambia and the Republic of Senegal, unequivocally condemns inflammatory statements made over social media that seek to sow discord,” the release stated.
Though the Secretariat did not name specific individuals or posts, the statement comes amid heightened attention on social media over cross-border issues, with some commentators accusing either side of interfering in domestic matters. The Secretariat cautioned against “unsubstantiated assertions” and warned that they only risk destabilizing the “progress we have collectively achieved.”
Reaffirming its commitment to peace and cooperation, the Secretariat emphasized the shared heritage and values that unite the two countries. “We call upon all stakeholders to prioritize constructive dialogue over divisive rhetoric and to seek clarification through established diplomatic channels to avoid further escalation of misunderstandings,” it added.
The Senegalo-Gambian Permanent Secretariat was established to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in areas including trade, security, and cultural exchange. Over the years, the body has played a key role in maintaining diplomatic relations and facilitating cross-border initiatives.
The latest call for calm and maturity in public discourse appears aimed at preventing tensions from spiralling further and reinforcing diplomatic norms amid the challenges posed by misinformation on social media platforms.
As both nations look ahead to continued collaboration on regional peace and development, the Secretariat reminded the public that the unity of The Gambia and Senegal is not only historical but vital to the future stability and prosperity of the sub-region.
