UTG lecturer questions improper training of civil servants

The Human Resources Lecturer of the University of the Gambia, Mr. Alasana Gitteh, has questioned the improper training of civil servants in the country for undergoing training not beneficial to the development of the country.

In an exclusive interview with him by this medium, the human resource lecturer of the University of the Gambia at the School of Business and Public Administration over the weekend stated that “It is sad to see many public servants who continue to undergo training for financial gains without adding any value to the development of the country. Where are we going to as a country?” Gitteh questioned.

He pointed out that the training of public servants should match with the organizational needs to avoid overlapping functions that are geared towards wasteful expenditure of national budgets.

”If we continue to copy the style of getting rich overnight through the payment of wages we receive from training where the same people are trained for an unproductive function, then our sectors will surely fall into the hands of a square peg in a round hole,” he lamented.

However, he said it is the responsibility of the government to render training for every public servant in the areas of specialization that will bring more productivity into the sectors “as we look forward to mitigating problems we face in our labour force.”

Mr. Gitteh therefore challenged the Barrow-led government to undo double roles placed on public servants, noting that such money that is given to those individuals (ministers) who are doing the same function can be used in filling the gaps in the national budget.

Meanwhile, he urged the government to take a proper assessment of the training of public servants as such will equip those in the labour force.
