Concerned Gambians expressed fear as the government of the Gambia confirmed an alleged coup plot by soldiers of The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF).

Reacting to the incident in an interview with The Voice, Foday N.M Drammeh, said: Gambians have been living in constant fear under the regime of former dictator Yahya Jammeh so it is like the same threat is continuing despite Jammeh, not in the country.

“Let Gambians remember that the former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh still have a loyalist in our Army, in the government, and all apparatus of the government, and they are still loyal to the former president, and the biggest mistake that has happened under the regime of President Adama Barrow is that the perpetrators that committed gross human right violations in Jammeh’s administration are the same people that he is currently awarding them with key positions in our government.

As long as the trend continues, Mr. Drammeh said there is still a possibility of frequent coup attempts in the Gambia with constant fears among the citizens.

Ebrima Ceesay, a concerned citizen, said the alleged coup attempt will worsen the economic situation of the country as the citizens continue to face the current economic condition they are going through.

Salifu Camara another concerned citizen stressed that the alleged attempted court will further exacerbate the current hardship the country

“They should try to unify Gambia more, especially the security apparatus.  Security itself is divided and they are divided into different aspects. We still have Jammeh loyalists in the Army. There is going to be a constant fear for the people living in the Gambia, they will not have a steady mind from now on which is sad.”
