World Helping Initial Project Support Organization in The Gambia has donated more than D2.4 million as support to needy families during the month of Ramadan.

Speaking at a food distribution programme held in Sukuta, Muhammed Nyan, the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer said: “World Helping Initial Project Support Organization (WHIPSO) in The Gambia has spent over D2.4 million in supporting the needy families during the month of Ramadan.”

The organization had distributed 200 food packages to the community of Sukuta which includes 20kg of rice, 5kg of sugar, 3.6kg of onion, tomato paste, soap, spaghetti, bucket, cup, choco power, 10 sachets of milk, and Jumbo.

On the same day, the organization distributed 1, 000 iftar packs to five different mosques.

“WHIPSO is able to distribute food items to at least 700 needy families. Helping people with food is very crucial, because it has to do with our daily plans. With food, one can work with a very comfortable mind.”

He said WHIPSO is a charitable foundation that started last year in The Gambia and wants to establish a company as well, a process already in the making. He added that the distribution of food packages to the needy families started during this year’s Ramadan and they have been to Gunjur, Faraba, Nuimi, Basse, and Sukuta. In Sukutu, he said they initially gave out 100 packages, followed by another 200 packages.

According to him, they have subsequent projects like boreholes, sponsorship for Madrasas, and construction of 20 classrooms at Pan Africa, and added that they help them with 36 solar panels and a pump that is worth over D300,000.00.

“We want to take youths from the street and create job opportunities, because the government cannot do everything. We have a social corporate responsibility and need to contribute our quota. Therefore, we do organize a borehole drilling apprenticeship for a minimum of six months, rather over several years,” he said.

Omar Bojang, the President of WHIPSO, explained that supporting the people is a big pleasure to them while adding that they started very young as an organization.

He disclosed that he brought the organization from Germany to help the neediest, children who lost their parents, and stand for the schools that lack support.

“We have realized that we have given out what Gambians are looking out for.  (Prices of) food items are very high in the market and unfortunately, the government focuses on roads and building other facilities. The most important thing we are in need of is food. If one wakes up from bed and does not have food, how can that person go to work,” he said.

He said the country is losing a generation, because a lot of young people are now on the streets, and they cannot depend on government for everything a reason they embark on this.

“We will not stop here but (will) build a company and employ Gambians, because we want to take the children out from the streets. Most of those that sell drugs lack hope and we are here to give them hope because the government cannot do everything,” he added.
