GPU builds capacity of journalists amid election

President of The Gambia Press Union said the union has built capacity of journalists in preparation for the December 4 election.

Speaking exclusively with this medium, Muhammed Bah said “GPU has been doing a lot for journalists in preparation towards the election, we have trained a lot of journalists on election reporting and shared the code of conduct that has election reporting component for journalists to follow.”

He stated that they facilitated journalists to have accreditation so that they can easily do their job during election.

“We have also conducted series of trainings on hate speech, fact-checking and we have now seen journalists doing fact checking and flagging out hate speech,” he added.

Mr Bah said they are doing a lot to safeguard journalists and their welfare that they play a vital role informing, educating and entertaining.

Meanwhile, he advised journalists to report fairly and truthfully, ensuring that whatever they are reporting is the truth and also to avoid giving platforms for people to spread hate speech.

“It’s important for the public to also understand that it is not every information heard or saw on social media is truth, they should verify before sharing it,” he said.
