Bakau cemetery guard dismisses exhumation of corpse

Basiru Gassama, a man who has been guiding the Bakau cemetery on voluntary service for 30 years, has dismissed report of exhumation of corpse at the cemetery, as he described the report as ‘false and unfounded’ and insisted that he is always present at the graveyard.

Basiru Gassama dismissal comes after a publication in one of the country’s daily newspapers published on 10th March, 2021 with captioned Another Corpse Exhumed In Bakau Cemetery.

“The publication in a local  media  Wednesday heading Another Corpse Exhumed In Bakau Cemetery is false and unfounded,” he said.

In stated in his explanation that “it happened on Tuesday, 9/3/2021. I was at the graveyard with Omar Jammeh of (Samma Kunda) and Lamin Janneh cleaning the busy area and painting the graveyard fence.  All of a sudden, I saw the Imam of Sanchaba Mosque with some youth who came to dig a new graveyard for an old man from Sanchaba as burial was to be held after 14:00 prayers. I left Omar to join the Imam for the grave digging, supporting the youth. All of a sudden, a nearby grave that was surrounded by Sanna Joof and some youth talking that they might think this is a graveyard. I left the digging and went with the Imam to know what is happening and observe by myself with the Imam. I told them even the middle cardboard is not out or the coffin,” he added.

He continued: “I and Sanna Joof put the top sand back on the grave yard that was scattered. I left with the Imam to continue our job at the graveyard. While digging the new grave, I saw many people entering the graveyard both male and female in their numbers, I confronted them of what is happening some of them said, they found another dead body different from the old woman that occured on Saturday 6/3/2021, and I was not present in that incident so I cannot say anything about it only ALLAH knows and sees.”
