The Leader of the Gambia for All Party (GFA), Bakary Bunja Darboe has said poverty in the country is at the extreme stage as there is no investment on main areas of economy activities of the country.

Among this areas, he outlined, include livestock development, fisheries and agriculture.

Mr Darboe a former vice president of The Gambia talking in an interview with the QTV said government has failed to invest in some required areas which have led to economic collapse. “For a long time now we depend a bit on tourism industry which has now hit by the Covid-19, we have huge problems but 90% or more mainly flow from the quality of leadership,” we have in the country – he said.

According to him, this world now is a highly independent world and is not possible to have completely independence. Adding that what the country need is to brace up to overcome those challenges and the challenges are multi-dimensional – political, institutional, economic and social.

“Some of the challenges are manmade, and in facts made by Gambians but I think if we are a continuous resolute we can overcome them. A lot will depend on the leadership that the Gambian people will choose for themselves because for the last 27years the country has been living in great difficulties. But a lot of it flow from the quality of leadership provided”, He said.

He disclosed further that “we had a situation for 22years and the resources of the country are devoted primarily to the objective of perpetuating the ruling clique in power. When the existence of such challenges doesn’t take away the fact that we are independent, people can argue about such details as to whether we are free in a 100% of the word”
