The Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has reemphasised that the Commission will introduce paper balloting to the country during election either this year or next year while claiming that The Gambia has the most accurate and transparent election system in the world.

Alieu Momarr Njie told lawmakers while they were summoned to give update on issues surrounding the 2021 voter’s registration recently.

“I assure Gambians that IEC is transparent and working hard to make sure the country has a smooth and fair election in 2021. The voter registration delay is not something we were wishing for. We are doing our best looking forward to commence the process on the actual date given,” he told lawmakers.

“The Gambia will move on with the paper balloting either this year or next year. I am a Gambian and working fully in the interest of all citizens, so eventually we will graduate from the system but is not yet ascertain,” he added.

He continued “Because we count the results on spot and when it comes to election voting all political parties are present in the beginning up to the end point.”

He said each party agent is given a copy to sign and have the result as soon as they are done, so “I am always the last person to know the result.”

He said: “without voters’ card, there will be no election and that’s key, we therefore urged the national assembly to empower the IEC to satisfy the public interest.”
