Major Wassa Camara has advised security personnel to respect civilian government at any time.
Testifying before Truth, Reconciliation and Reparation Commission (TRRC) yesterday, Major Camara said that security personnel should be loyal to “any government in place. And we should respect the authority of the civilians.”
He added that all security apparatus should respect civil rule to ensure peace and tranquility in the country.
“We should focus on job we are meant to do and leave the governance system with the government,” Camara advised his fellow security personnel while making his final statement before the truth commission.
However, he expressed regret for attempting to overthrow the democratically elected government of former President Yahya Jammeh in 2006, saying if he was not jailed for nine years now, he would have obtained his PHD in education.
He also called on the citizenry to avoid tribalism and all forms of disunity as well work collectively to attain the sustainable development goal the country is yearning for on daily basis.
Major Camara spent nine years at the State Central Prison, Mile II in Banjul after the 2006 was flopped coup led by former Army Chief Ndure Cham.
He also detailed how he was brutally tortured in prison while asking for medical support as well as to regain his plots of land at Jalamba village in West Coast Region.
