19 farmers trained on poultry breeding

Nineteen poultry farmers drawn from ten villages have been trained on poultry breeding and management aimed to help address rural youths’ migration and curb the negative impact of climate change.

Held at Njawara Agricultural Training Centre, each of the trainees received a support worth D46,500 from Agro Ecology and Eco Restoration Practices project through Action Aid International The Gambia.

Speaking during the training, NATC project manager, Salieu Samba, said the training is meant to support and strengthen small scale farmers to enhance resilient building amid climate change and acquire requisite knowledge and skills.

Sarjo Camara, a regional livestock director for North Bank Region highlighted the important of building capacity of the farmers on poultry breeding and management saying the training would help youths and women to develop entrepreneurship skills and knowledge on poultry breeding.

Topics covered are construction an ideal poultry house, preparation of house to welcome birds, transporting and receiving chicks brooding chicks and practical session on brooding, lighting and heating for boilers disease and disease control, bio security record keeping, marketing and feeding.

Hulaimatou Jallow, a beneficiary from Kerr Ndongo commended EU through NATC for supporting vulnerable youths in society, adding the support will help strengthen capacity and income.

Yankuba Jatta also a beneficiary from Kinteh Kunda Janneh ya hailed the project for the support and noted that support would obviously help to attain livelihood development.

He noted that capacity development would provide an opportunity to have better understanding on poultry keeping in preparation to kick-start their individual poultry in all ten communities.
