Queues in Supermarkets amid COVID 19 impact on food shortages

Gambians in all work of lives were Wednesday seen busy purchasing food commodities in quantities as what is belief to prevent food shortage as the country registered its first case of coronavirus.

Men, women made long queues and filled up different supermarkets around the greater Banjul areas to buy various food commodities for consumption amid fear of food shortage as the country registered it first case of the corona virus on Tuesday.

Many buyers at Alvihag supermarket Westfield were rushing to buy different food commodities.

Awa Jobe, a regular buyer at the supper maker described situation where people have to make long queues in making sure they have available food stocks in their homes due to the fear of food shortage and increase in price of local commodities as big sign fear of coronavirus.

“Two days ago I bought a crate of egg here for D175 dalasi and today because people are buying commodities in quantities the price is increase to D200 dalasi and this was my fear knowing the impact the virus will have on the food price,” she told The Voice an interview.

Lamin Fatajo also buyer advices the government to take measure of controlling price of basic food commodities in the market, pointing that traders might take advantage to increase food prices.

“I have decided to buy many food commodities including other usable materials such as sanitizers for my family but you can it is even running out of stock and having a price increase on it. I am charged D700 dalasi for sanitizer which was costing only D150 dalasi before we have a first reported case of the coronavirus in the country,” he said.
