Fight against Gender Based Violence Continues in Gambia

 As the fight against gender based violence strengthens in the country- the Ministry of Justice yesterday launched a draft program unit of sexual and gender based violence at the Atlantic hotel in Banjul.

The unit has been launched to underscore the protection women against domestic violence in the country.

It is also established to coordinate and collaborate with relevant institution like police in fight against the practice.

In his remark, the vice-president Ousainou Darboe called for collective effort towards fighting against gender based violence and it related cases in the country, adding the government cannot do it alone.

“The fight against gender based violence cannot be done by the government alone. The government needs the partnership and the collaboration of our development And partners, civil services organizations and the media,” he said.

The Gambia’s 2 said women and children are the most vulnerable people in the communities saying their precaution is vital.

He added: “The government of the Gambia after ratification of revenant international regional treaties convention of elimination of all form of discrimination as women for African chapter to convention on the rights of the child and African chapter on the welfare of the child came with national laws that are in line for the promotion and protection of rights of women and children.”

He said sexual offences and the domestic violence were enacted in 2013 legislative, describing the act commendable.

According to him, the new measures, policies and strategies will create awareness on women and children, adding “the laws will be strictly enforced to most vulnerable people in our society.”

He further expected the new initiative to provide skill and rapid responses to fully monitory complain of gender based violence.
