Honourable Suwaibou Touray has been elected Secretary General of the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), succeeding veteran politician and party co-founder Halifa Sallah.

Touray, who represents Wuli East in the National Assembly, was chosen during the party’s congress held over the weekend. The election marks a significant leadership transition within the party, reflecting both continuity and a generational shift in the opposition movement.

Halifa Sallah, a long-serving politician and one of the founders of PDOIS, has been a central figure in Gambian politics for decades, advocating for democratic governance, human rights, and social justice. His decision to step down from the Secretary General post opens the way for younger leaders to steer the party’s future direction.

Suwaibou Touray has been active in the party for several years, serving in various capacities and representing the Wuli East constituency in the National Assembly. Party members highlighted his experience, grassroots engagement, and commitment to PDOIS values as key factors in his election.

In his acceptance speech, Touray pledged to strengthen the party’s organizational structures, enhance youth participation, and maintain PDOIS’s role as a vocal opposition force in Gambian politics. Observers note that his leadership comes at a critical time, as the country prepares for upcoming elections and ongoing efforts to consolidate democratic institutions continue.

Political analysts describe the transition as a strategic move to inject new energy into PDOIS while preserving its core principles. The party congress reportedly proceeded smoothly, with delegates emphasizing unity and the importance of collective action in advancing the party’s objectives.

Touray’s election underscores a broader trend within Gambian politics, where established parties are increasingly balancing experienced leadership with fresh perspectives to address evolving national challenges.
