Three Gambian beaches have been awarded the ‘Pediatricians’ Green Flag’ 2026, an international recognition that identifies beaches considered safe, healthy and family-friendly for children and families.
The award was conferred on Fajara, Kololi and Kotu beaches by the International Pediatricians’ Green Flag Project, an initiative established in 2008 by Italian paediatrician Professor Italo Farnetani.
The project assesses beaches using child-focused criteria, including environmental quality, water cleanliness, safety standards, recreational facilities, visitor services, access to healthcare and emergency support.
According to the organizers, the recognition places the three Gambian beaches among only six beaches in Africa to have received the distinction. The remaining awardees are two beaches in Tanzania and one in Tunisia.
The award is expected to enhance The Gambia’s reputation as a family-friendly tourism destination and support efforts to attract more international visitors, particularly families seeking safe seaside holiday destinations.
Tourism stakeholders say the recognition reflects the quality of the country’s coastal tourism products and reinforces the importance of maintaining high standards in environmental management, safety and visitor services.
Unlike conventional environmental awards that focus mainly on water quality and environmental management, the Pediatricians’ Green Flag also evaluates factors affecting the health and well-being of children and families.
The recognition comes as The Gambia continues to promote sustainable tourism and diversify its tourism products while improving standards across the sector.
Industry stakeholders say the award provides an opportunity to strengthen Destination Gambia’s international profile and attract more family-oriented travellers.
