The Supreme Court of The Gambia is expected to deliver judgment today in a constitutional petition challenging the removal of former Auditor General Modou Ceesay from office.
The petition contests the constitutionality of President Adama Barrow’s decision to remove Ceesay from office late last year.
The case, which has attracted considerable public interest, is being heard by the Supreme Court presided over by Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow.
The Court is expected to determine whether the President acted within his constitutional powers in dismissing the former Auditor General and, if the removal is found to be unconstitutional, whether Ceesay should be reinstated.
Ceesay’s legal team argues that the President lacked the constitutional authority to remove him in the manner in which the dismissal was effected.
The ruling is expected to provide judicial interpretation of the constitutional provisions governing the removal of holders of independent constitutional offices and the extent of presidential powers in such matters.
