The Gambia U-17 national team, the Scorplings, launched their WAFU Zone A U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a convincing 4-1 comeback victory over Sierra Leone at the Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio.
Sierra Leone made a bright start, taking the lead in the third minute to put The Gambia under early pressure.
The Scorplings responded quickly, with Alieu Saine converting two penalties in the ninth and 13th minutes to turn the game in The Gambia’s favour.
Saine’s double gave Yahya Manneh’s side renewed confidence as they took control of the contest.
The Gambia extended their lead before half-time when Shariff Touray found the net, sending the Scorplings into the break with a 3-1 advantage.
The Gambians continued to control proceedings after the restart, combining disciplined defending with attacking pressure as they looked to protect their lead.
Substitute Muhamed Jatta completed the scoring in the 76th minute, reacting quickest to a rebound to make it 4-1 and seal all three points for The Gambia.
The result gives the Scorplings an impressive start to their WAFU Zone A qualifying campaign and puts them in a strong position ahead of their remaining group matches.
