A police officer on Tuesday told the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court that he did not see the accused person in possession of an allegedly stolen iPhone XR valued at D15,000 and was not present when the complainant allegedly handed the phone to him.
Sergeant 3686 Yankuba Camara, attached to the Kairaba Police Station, was testifying as the second prosecution witness (PW2) in the case before Principal Magistrate Sallah M’Bai.
Sub-Inspector B. Fatty announced his appearance for the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Camara, who said he resides in Fajikunda, told the court that he recognised the accused person in the dock, having previously seen him at the Kairaba Police Station.
Asked whether he recalled 7 March 2026, the witness said he was on duty at the station’s charge office that morning when the accused arrived to make inquiries about the transfer of ownership of two vehicles.
He said he explained the procedures to the accused, who subsequently told him that he was going to Senegambia and would return to continue with the process.
Camara testified that he did not see the accused again that day until another individual arrived at the station and reported an incident involving him.
According to the witness, the complainant told police that he had gone on a town trip with the accused and that they had travelled to several locations before reaching an area near the gate of the market in Latrikunda.
Camara said the complainant alleged that the accused had asked to borrow his phone to take photographs.
The complainant reportedly told police that he remained at the location for some time but could no longer find the accused, prompting him to report the matter to the police.
Camara said he subsequently opened a case file and forwarded it to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.
He further testified that on 19 March 2026, while he was at the police station, the complainant arrived with the accused and told him that he had apprehended him.
The witness’s testimony is expected to form part of the prosecution’s evidence as the court continues hearing the case.
