The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has intercepted 17 men in Banjul following a report of suspected irregular migration, with preliminary investigations indicating that they may have been preparing for an irregular sea journey.
The Banjul Regional Command said the operation was carried out on Wednesday at the Black and White Bar and Restaurant, located behind the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH).
According to the police, the operation followed intelligence received about suspected irregular migration activities at the premises.
A team of officers led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Sulayman Darboe responded to the report and found the individuals at the location. They were subsequently taken to Banjul Police Station for questioning and further investigation.
The GPF said the group comprised 17 males, including six Gambian nationals, nine Senegalese nationals and two Malian nationals.
According to the police, preliminary findings suggest that the men may have been preparing for an irregular sea voyage. However, the force said investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case and verify the information received.
The police renewed their appeal to members of the public to report suspicious activities, stressing that timely information is vital in preventing crime and enhancing public security.
