Medina United’s historic CAF Champions League campaign ended on Saturday after a 1-1 draw with Sierra Leonean side Star Sport Academy at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
The result left the tie level at 1-1 on aggregate after the two sides played to a goalless draw in the first leg in Sierra Leone.
Star Sport Academy took the lead in the 53rd minute when Santigie Fornah found the net to give the visitors a crucial advantage.
Medina United, the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) Division One champions, pushed forward in search of an equaliser and were rewarded deep into stoppage time.
Ebou Sanyang scored in the fifth minute of added time to level the match and revive Medina United’s hopes of completing a comeback.
However, the Gambian champions could not find the winning goal before the final whistle.
With the aggregate score tied at 1-1, Star Sport Academy advanced on the away-goals rule after scoring in The Gambia following the 0-0 first-leg draw.
The result brought an end to Medina United’s historic debut campaign in the CAF Champions League.
