An elderly man, Dembo Bojang, has appeared before Magistrate Kanjura B. Sambou of Brikama Magistrate’s Court, charged with malicious injury to property.
Bojang appeared before the court on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, on a single count of malicious injury to property, contrary to Section 290(1) of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.
Sgt. 4812 J. Preirra appeared for the Inspector General of Police (IGP), while Bojang was not represented by a lawyer.
According to the particulars of the charge, Bojang allegedly on or about Aug. 12th, 2026, at Sanyang Village in the West Coast Region, willfully and unlawfully cut down cashew trees belonging to Louis G. Mendy.
The charge sheet alleges that the trees were cut using a chainsaw and values the damaged property at D15,000.
The charge was read to Bojang in English and interpreted into Mandinka by the court interpreter.
He told the court that he understood the charge and pleaded not guilty.
Sgt. Preirra applied for an adjournment to enable the prosecution to call its witnesses and did not object to bail being granted to the accused.
Magistrate Sambou subsequently granted Bojang bail in the sum of D30,000, with one Gambian surety.
The court ordered the surety to deposit a valid Gambian passport or national identification card with the Registrar of the Court and depose to means.
The case was adjourned to a later date for hearing.
