Mustapha Jammeh was Tuesday dragged before Magistrate K.B. Sambou of Brikama Magistrates’ Court charged with shop-breaking, felony and stealing.
Cadet Inspector A. Sanyang, representing the Inspector General of Police, told the court that the accused was present and unrepresented and that the matter was before the court for plea-taking.
The first count showed that Jammeh was charged with breaking into a shop and committing a felony, contrary to Section 258(a) of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.
The particulars of the offence alleged that on 22 September 2026, at Sotokoi Village in the West Coast Region, Jammeh broke into and entered the shop of Babucarr Sanyang after damaging the padlock with the intention of committing a felony.
Similarly, under the second count, Jammeh was charged with stealing, contrary to Section 226 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.
The particulars alleged that on the same date and at the same location, Jammeh stole D10,000.00 in cash belonging to Babucarr Sanyang.
The charges were read to Jammeh in English and interpreted into Mandinka, the language he chose to speak. He denied damaging the padlock, telling the court that he found it in that condition. He also denied the stealing charge, prompting the court to record “not-guilty” pleas on both counts.
Cadet Inspector Sanyang applied for an adjournment to enable the prosecution to call its witnesses and said the prosecution had no objection to bail.
Magistrate Sambou subsequently granted Jammeh bail in the sum of D30,000, with one Gambian surety who must deposit a valid national identity card or passport with the court registrar and depose to means.
The case was adjourned to 18th November 2026 for the hearing of PW1.
