Former Gambia Football Federation (GFF) presidential candidate Sadibou Kamaso has disputed the federation’s account of his decision to decline an appointment linked to The Gambia’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Somalia.
Kamaso said the letter he received from the GFF General Secretary concerned the Gambia-Somalia Match Fundraising Committee, rather than the Match Event Management Committee mentioned in a recent statement by the federation.
Explaining his decision, Kamaso said he declined the appointment because of the short notice, the lack of details on the proposed fundraising target and existing travel commitments.
He also questioned the way the matter was presented publicly, arguing that the GFF statement could create a misleading impression and potentially damage his reputation.
Kamaso, however, said his decision should not be interpreted as a refusal to support the federation, adding that he remained willing to work with GFF President Kemo Ceesay and contribute to the development of Gambian football.
The clarification comes after the GFF announced that Kamaso and Col. Musa Jammeh, both former contenders in the recent GFF presidential election, had been approached to serve on a committee linked to preparations for the Scorpions’ upcoming international fixture.
While Kamaso declined the appointment, Col. Musa Jammeh accepted the role.
The Scorpions are preparing to face Somalia in a 2027 AFCON qualifier, with the GFF also working on arrangements for the match at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
